What is osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a form of hands on therapy which primarily treats the musculoskeletal (muscular and skeletal) systems of your body. It is one of the oldest manipulative therapies, having originated in America over 135 years ago.
Within Australia, Osteopathy (commonly referred to as ‘Osteo’), is fast becoming one of the most popular treatment options recommended by general practitioners and specialists to treat a wide variety of injuries and conditions.
What do osteopaths treat, diagnose and prevent?
Sporting injuries such as strains, sprains, bursitis and tendonitis· Back, neck, jaw and shoulder pain· Arthritis and joint injuries· Headache and migraine· Postural and repetitive strain injuries (RSI) · Hip, knee, ankle and foot pain· Elbow, wrist and hand pain· Asthma & breathing problems.
What to expect at your initial consultation
Initial treatments involve a 45 minute visit (and 30minute standard ‘follow ups’) in which a detailed history is obtained and a general screen is performed of your muscular and skeletal system, including orthopaedic testing on relevant areas.
A diagnosis is made and a discussion of the most appropriate treatment methods and options is provided (which may include sending you off for x-rays). Hands-on treatment is given, which may include some of the following techniques such as gentle joint manipulation, massage, stretching, articulation/mobilisation, muscle energy and myofascial techniques.
Most importantly, a management plan is developed with you to provide the best prevention and rehabilitation for your injury/condition.
Why choose St. Kilda Osteopathy?
Our aim is to not only treat your injured area, but to provide you with the appropriate knowledge on how to best prevent the injury/condition from occurring through strengthening, stretching, postural and nutritional advice.
Long initial consultations help provide your osteopath with the ability to assess the injury and also the surrounding areas to determine if any secondary biomechanical changes have taken place. It is very important that you understand your condition, as this will also aid in the fastest path to full recovery.
