Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR Therapy) uses the ability of your own brain to reprocess traumatic material in a very simple and straightforward way. This is a fairly recent therapy, first developed in the late 1980’s by Dr Francine Shapiro in the United States, but one which already has a significant body of research proving its worth in releasing clients from the legacy of traumatic experience.

Whether from single incident trauma (a car accident, a crime, an assault) or multiple trauma (childhood abuse, combat), EMDR Therapy has shown consistently better results than Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or Exposure Therapy. It works by using your own brain’s capability to rewire itself and process memories by the use of bilateral stimulation (most commonly eye movements that are something like the eye movements of rapid eye movement sleep). The experience of EMDR therapy is much less technical than it sounds. It’s a safe, non-invasive therapy that is suitable for all ages from small children upwards.

EMDR has had successful results in treating:

– Sexual and /or physical abuse
– Post traumatic stress disorders
– Panic attacks
– Disturbing memories
– Complicated grief
– Pain disorders
– Body dysmorphia
– Dissociative disorders
– Eating disorders
– Personality disorders
